JAMES MADISON MEN:
The Dukes (4-1 CAA, 5-4) have posted wins against their last three opponents, all members of the CAA. Sprinter John McLaren (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) leads the CAA in the 50-yard freestyle (20.51), and set a pool record in the last meet with a time of 20.58 seconds. Geoff Meyer (Fort Washington, Pa./Germantown Academy), a versatile swimmer leads the conference in various events. He is first in the 100-, 200- 500-, and 1650-yard freestyle. Meyer is also second in the 200- and 400-yard individual medley. In the last meet, Meyer captured two individual events, the 200-yard individual medley and the 500-yard freestyle and was also a part of the victorious 200-yard freestyle relay. Junior Jeff Hicks (Clifton, Va./Centreville) won the 200-yard freestyle and the 200-yard backstroke against George Mason.

THE SERIES:
The last time these two teams met head-to-head was January 12, 2002 in Newark, Del. JMU won the meet with a score of 154-75 by winning nine of the 13 events.. For JMU, Meyer won the 400-yard individual medley and the 500-yard freestyle. Also earing single victories for the Dukes were Brody Reid (Richmond, Va., Douglas Freeman), Ryan Hegna (Cranford, N.J.), Aaron Nester (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette) and Hicks. The only returning winner for the Blue Hens is Rick Dressel (Wilmington, Del./McKean) who won the 200-yard butterfly event. Delaware captured the diving events and also took one relay.

MEN'S SWIMMING DUNKS PATRIOTS, MCLAREN SETS POOL MARK

Senior sprinter John McLaren set a pool record in the 50 free.

Harrisonburg, Va. (1/25/03)- Senior John McLaren (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) set a pool record in the 50-yard freestyle and helped establish another record by anchoring the 200-yard medley relay to highlight James Madison’s 134-108 victory against Colonial Athletic Association rival George Mason Saturday at JMU’s Savage Natotorium. The Dukes upped their record to 5-4 with their third consecutive win.

McLaren, who holds the JMU record in the 50 free (19.97), shaved his own pool mark of 20.59 with a time of 20.58 seconds. McLaren swam the freestyle leg on the medley relay and was teamed with junior backstroker Jeff Hicks (Clifton, Va./Centreville), sophomore butterflyer Greg Landrum (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) and sophomore breaststroker Aaron Nestor (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette). The unit registered a time of 1:32.96, breaking the record of 1:33.54 set in 1998 by a team from Penn State.

In the 200-yard freestyle the Dukes swept the event with a first-, second-, and third-place finish. Touching the wall first was Hicks with a time of 1:43.52. Next was junior Mark Depew (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock) and then freshman Adam Zurowski (Woodbridge, Va./Bishop Ireton). Hicks also won the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:54.83.

Junior Jeff Meyer (Fort Washington, Pa./Geramantown Academy) finished the day with three first-place finishes. In the 200-yard individual medley, Meyer hit the wall with a time of 1:53.67 and also took the 500-yard freestyle (4:43.63). Meyer was also the first leg of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay (1:25.07). Joining him were junior Mike Nicholas (Herndon, Va./ Paul VI), Depew and freshman Danny Gray (Carlise, Pa./Carlisle). Gray also won the 100-yard freestyle, coming in at 47.26, and Nicholas finished second in the 50-yard freestyle relay (21.59).

Nester took a second-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:07.71), his second best time of the season.

The Dukes will be back in action in both men’s and women’s competition on February 1 at 1 p.m. when they will host the University of Delaware in a Colonial Athletic Association meet. This will be the Dukes final home meet of the season, and they will recognize their seniors of 2003.
